George Lewis
I’m 92 Years Old. I’m Painting as Fast as I Can. I’ve lived three distinct lives. First, I played for the Boston Red Sox organization. Then, I spent decades as a stockbroker with Merrill Lynch. But my true calling came after retirement.
In 2002, I picked up a palette knife and never put it down. I don't use brushes—just one knife to create bold, textured strokes. It is honest, decisive work.
My art became a vehicle for change. As a Rotarian known as "The WaterMan," I’ve used my paintings to help bring clean water to over 2,000,000 people in 37 countries.
But I’m not done yet.
My focus now is on cleft palate surgeries. I want to help children smile.

THE PROCESS
Everything I make starts with a knife.
I don't use brushes. Every piece is built with palette knives — oil and cold wax, laid onto cradled wood panels in layers you can feel with your hand.
A knife doesn't let you fuss. You can't blend a mistake away or soften an edge until it feels safe. You commit. The paint goes down thick and it stays where you put it. That's the appeal — the work has to be decisive, and so do I.
What you get is a surface that's alive. The ridges catch real light, so the piece changes from morning to evening. Hang it and you'll still be finding something new in it a year from now. That's not decoration. That's something you live with.
